Happy January, Happy New Year, Happy New Decade!

Hello, Lovelies!

I know, I did already do all my Happy New Year social media posts so I KNOW you know I wish you all, dear Yarny Friends, a VERY Happy, Healthy, Prosperous, Joyous and Contented 2020! Can't say it too many times these days... we need all the good luck, good thoughts, good words and good deeds we can get, right? I, for one, am launching myself into this new decade... well "launching" may be a bit exaggerated ( my dodgy knee ) feeling determined to make every day count for something.

For me, this means:
πŸ’™ Not wasting time worrying about things I cannot change (my default setting is dialled high on Worry).
πŸ’™ Making healthy choices every day (not just occasionally). This means, getting enough sleep, cutting down on social media, walking EVERY DAY, eating even more sustainably (plant-power whoohoooo!), cutting out plastic from my life ( a huge task, right? ).
πŸ’™ Reading "world" News only once a week ( I need to know if an asteroid or tsunami is headed my way )!
πŸ’™ Reading a good fiction book at least once a month (suggestions welcome).
πŸ’™ Drinking top-notch coffee (life is too short to waste on instant nonsense ever again).
πŸ’™ Turning my frown upside down (so much harder than you'd expect considering what's going on in our poor old world).
πŸ’™Journal regularly (it's either that or a Therapist). To get myself motivated, I bought an inexpensive journal and made Nisha witness my good intentions. Anyways, those Owl Eyes will guilt trip me into doing what I said I'd do!

It's been very hot and humid over the last few days and Roxy and I have headed out to our beloved tree-lined Alphen Trail every day. Read more about this LOVELY walk HERE. The river looks like a skinny snake now as it wends its way towards the ocean. We begin our walk at Quince where they make the best coffee I have tasted in a long while. I'm not a snob on any level but have conceded that I am indeed a Coffee Snob. Quince has spoiled me and now I can never move house seeing as they're my Coffee Dealer and only 73 steps from my front door. Roxy is becoming a Very Good Girl at restaurants. Believe me when I say that in the past she was NOT a Very Good Girl but rather a little Monster on the lead and would try and pinch people's carrot cake right off their cake forks!

There are a number of these swings placed along the river bank and you can't see it in the image above but some of these swing out over a 10metre drop! Roxy and I like to climb up and down these steep embankments looking for treasure. Usually, it's just some pretty dried wild grasses, a colourful leaf or some interesting branches but yesterday.....oh, my! I literally yelled out loud "I'M SO LUCKY!", like an excited child! I found this painted stone and when I turned it over there was this! It's a thing. I never knew. I love this idea and if you like, you can join the CT Rocks! Group and start planting your own stones. I'm definitely going to paint a few stones and leave a pleasant surprise for someone else.

Finally, you're probably wondering when I'm going to get around to talking Crochet! This year I'll be releasing the Green Tea Block and Extension in May. MAAAAY I can hear you shouting, that's sooo faaar awaaaay! Thing is, I am admitting defeat...I simply cannot function in full crochet mode through our hot and humid Cape Town summer months. I've tried. I was even pregnant through three Summers just to prove I could do it. It must be age creeping up on me, or global warming, but my capacity to tolerate extreme heat has diminished year on year and it's now at 0%.

HOWEVER, I can manage smaller projects and as many of you may have already noted, Bloemfontein Rose is out of retirement, rewritten, resized and accompanied by a full Video tutorial!
I think last year I mentioned that bringing the older patterns out of retirement was on my project radar and now I'm going at them, all hooks blazing!

Last of all is our first Giveaway of the roaring 20's! I fell in love with the Norway Spruce Blanket by Rosina Plane. Isn't it lovely? Not to mention it will add to your crochet skills list, right? All you need to do to stand a chance of being one of our 3 x Lucky Winners is find the little clue in the pic below which points us to a future Holiday. If you can guess which one that is, then leave a comment in the comments section below and don't forget to add your Ravelry name! Good Luck! πŸ€

Thank you so much for stopping by and see you in Crochetland!
πŸ’— Jen

  1. Oh, to read the world news only once a week, that is an awesome idea! I try to tone it down to once a day... and dit not succeed so far. But I keep trying and feel inspired by your good ideas! <3

    1. Hi dear Cindy! I think more and more these resolutions are necessary, not even a choice anymore if we want to live a good life to the best of our ability. Last year I was addicted to daily news and I got so caught up with all the drama that it was overwhelming! Eventually you realise that daily news is often just bite sized pieces of whatever journalist can put into a newspaper or online news site. It's about selling news and often what we need to really hear is not featured or followed up on. Nevermind the fake stuff. So far I have not read the news for 3 weeks. I don't miss it and life goes on. Happier New Year to you and your Fam. xx

  2. So good to read about your resolutions for 2020, they have inspired me to also make more positive changes to my lifestyle.
Agreed, our SA summers are impossible when trying to work on a large project and a new project by you in May,is perfect. I'll start it in celebration of my 60th birthday that month. Perfect!
I'm so glad to read you'll be "un-retiring your stunning earlier blocks, your newer fans will find them to be an absolute delight.
And of course, we have the Easter holiday to look forward to to rest up and prepare for Green Tea.

    1. May sounds like a perfect month to start a big projext. It will be our Autumn and our Northern yarny Friends will be into Spring by then, so not too hot! I've had quite the laugh reading through my older patterns...how did you all manage! Lol!! xx

  3. Oh I wanted to make a crochet/knitted cardi with Nordic motive. We're on the same theme there. I have a subscription on a saterday paper and internet daily newspaper from my 17th. I sift out the saturday paper, love it. It's first news from Amsterdam, then local then the wordly mess. Art, theatre, opinions and a glossy appendix with interviews. I refuse to see tv. Lot of rubbish. The stone group, love the idea. My son made me a little demon on a rock to protect the house πŸ˜„ I understand you slowing down in summer and the big work left for cooler times. So happy with that little square and the mandala's. Very slow lately but not because of the heat. Though it's 20 degrees hotter then 7 years ago which is weird! No resolutions here. Never did. Life is a surprise and I just do my best, nothing more to do. And how I would love a good coffee shop on my way! Nothing here but water and farms. Pity. Make that stiff espresso myself eh πŸ˜‰ hugs dear.

    1. One day I will tell the story of that close coffee shop. I had a dream about it, and then it happened. Now when I go there I say I'm living in my dream. Hope your weekend is fabulous!! Did you guess the holiday from the pic? :D xx

  4. Happy New Year! Love your Roxy and that she loves everybody’s carrot cake. Im working on doing my best too. Happy with incremental changes on a daily basis of how I think and what I do and don’t do. There is nothing better than a holiday to celebrate, I’m looking forward to Easter too! baby60

    1. Our little Roxy was in such bad shape when we rescued her and she's come a very, very long way. Now she really is an absolute delight to take anywhere. I agree with incremental changes...even small changes in the right direction make a big difference! Happy weekend!! xx

  5. I’m making similar changes and it feels so good! To start with a fresh mind and hopefully a happier stronger body. Going slow and kindly on myself and what changes will be is good enough this year.

That bunny is sooo sweet, easter for the win.

Have a lovely day and weekend, I’m looking forward to continue on with rnd 30 of the hibiscus tea floral block! So excited!!!

    Big hugs,

  6. I have slowly started decorating my house with some touch of the holiday's. As I have two daughters, I have always done Easter and, in fact, they still get Easter and they are in their 20's! Some of your goals sound like mine but oh so much better written! Ravelry squishy0313

    1. Thank you so much! I owe the words to good coffee. I'm not that wordy without it. :D Same here with celebrating these Holidays, I still do them even though it's a bit more difficult now to get the brood all in one place, at the same time, on the same day. :D Happy weekend! xx

  7. Thanks again Jen for taking me on a wonderful journey. I enjoyed fossicking down the leafy trail with you and Roxy and finding that beautiful stone. The stop for coffee was great and I'm happy to hear that we're only drinking the top shelf stuff.
I think the white rabbit is your holiday clue, because an adventure down the rabbit hole and into Wonderland would be the best holiday ever.In fact, I think I may pack my little crochet bag and join you for an adventure Xx

    1. Oh clever you...I didn't even think of a holiday down the rabbit hole, but that's definitely an option always! A basket full of Yarn, some yummy picnic food and a Barista with a coffee trolley, who knows how to make excellent Capuccinos and Lattes!:D Happy weekend, dear Noelene! See you in Crochetland ( which is sort of a Wonderland ). xox

  8. I think your idea to only check once a week if an astroid is headed our way is a great idea.
I also enjoyed taking the walk with you. We are in our winter full swing at the moment with wind chills at -10°F. Brrr! No walks for at least a few weeks!
Bunnies are so sweet! I have a collection of many different types, from porcelain to hand knitted or crocheted, that I set about my house to decorate for Easter!

    Much love & hugs!

  9. Oooo, Heidi, I think you've just described my perfect weather. The more Brrrr's, the better! It's hard to comprehend that I'm a 6th generation South African. My European ancestry is trying hard to adapt to the African heat but seems to be failing dismally! Lol! Enjoy your wintery months, Spring is not too far off. Happy weekend! xox

  10. I noticed the little white bunny, so could the Holiday that's coming up be Easter?

I do enjoy your cheerful blog, and the lovely pics of your lush, green, sunshiny home. It's a bright spot in a dark, overly-polarized world. Here in Seattle, we've actually had some❄❄❄SNOW!πŸ™€That very seldom happens here. It's a good time to stay in, sipping hot tea, and...

    Keep Calm and Crochet On.

  12. Thank you so much for showing pictures of your beautiful area. It's our winter here, so seeing the green trees is a great pick-me-up. I know what you mean about the heat, though. The older I get, the less I like it. I saw the Norway Spruce Blanket pattern last night and thought I would love to have that! Thank you. Ravelry - cksteffen

  13. Loving your blog Jen! The little white bunny in your picture is pointing to a new destination...Norway? Reminds me of our northern Michigan, where the air is so sweet with forests of Pine trees and there is such a peace that will give you time to be inspired. After following your video instructions and tales for the Wildflower and Karoo journey, I am up for any new challenge you may cast out!

    1. Hi Alice! I'm very happy to hear you are up for more hooksntales challenges! :D We have so few pine forests left seeing as there's been a concerted effort to remove them as alien vegetation and replant with indigenous varieties. Ecologicaly, especially here in South Africa which is traditionally more dry than wet, this makes sense to me, but I do love a good pine forest, the fragrance of pine cones and pine needles is unbeatable! Happy weekend to you! xx

    1. Hi Kris...yep, urgh, Summer! But I promised myself to make it a good one, each and every day. I'm trying to look past the heat and humidity and the black south easter that shreds my carefully tended garden and dries everything to tinder! I'll let you know at the end of Summer if my "Summer Hygge" plan worked. Lol! xx

  15. Jen, I love your resolutions. I need to get back to my lovely walks on the beach again. Red tide kept me away part of the year; can’t breathe when it’s there. Now I have a stack of books piled up to read there when my walk is finished. Looking forward to the weekend to see how many of the six projects I can finish. I am aching to get started on the High Tea Floral Block and Extension. Lovely white rabbit in your table; reminds me of the cute little ones in my yard. Easter is just around the corner with all the beautiful spring flower. Enjoy your coffee and thank you for your lovely designs!

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words and I promise, the High Tea Floral Block will not disappoint! Julia Cameron, who wrote the incomparable Artists Way also wrote a lesser known book called Walking In This World. I've always loved walking so it was a treasure find to read her book and it's kept me walking, come rain or shine. :) Happy weekend and I hope the beach sees you soon. xox

  19. Jen, I can't crochet when the weather is hot and humid. Try as I might, the yarn absolutely won't move through my damp hands. It seems to me that every year, the temperature increases, and I remain inside as much as possible.
So many books to read, so many patterns to crochet, so many hugs to give . . . so much busyness! How do we choose? That's life, and it's good, especially when my grandchildren become so excited around holidays. Soon Easter will be here, and I will share their joyful sweet faces as we sing Alleluias. Until then, my hook will continue to be busy.

  20. I'm happy to know I'm not the only one who "suffers" through Summer. I'm good to go in dry heat but it's the humidity that floors me. I can barely breathe and my head feels filled with cottonwool! I can manage most things but working out complicated designs is not one of them! :D I'm looking forward to the cooler seasons and for me Easter marks the beginning of more bearable weather. I hope you're enjoying a lovely weekend! :D xx

  21. Jen its been so horrible over here ( can I send you some cold wind?) we had no electricity for a few days then it was on and off again.
I love to read, so there is always a book next to me when I take a break from crocheting. Vic and I only eat meat now once every 2 weeks, hopefully we will be able to cut it out of our life.
We walk to the beach, when the wind wont blow us away. Even thru all my health problems I SMILE every day and say "THANK YOU" out loud, the universe hears me.
I also groud my self with the earth every day no matter how cold or hot it is, 10 min in winter and 20 min. rest of the year. I go to my garden with out shoes and stand there it helps to ground yourself with Mother Earth.
Tell your loved ones how much you love them and appreciate them every day, cause life is too short.
I like living in my little own world with my hubby, kids when they come over to see us, our dog, with my Greek coffee, my hook and yarn and a good book or a audiobook. Many hug's my friend. ~Sofia~ ~wisdom 61~
