Sunday Folk.

Happy Friday, Yarnarrinas!
Hope you are all well in your patch of Crochetland?
🌷

First of all, I want to say a 💗HUGE THANK YOU💗 for all the love for the Sunday Folk Hexie! I had no intention of making it because I know you are all waiting patiently for Part 2 of the Hibiscus Tea Block Extension which is due next Friday ( hahaha as I hear THAT deadline whooshing by ). But no, seriously, I am working full speed ahead to actually meet that deadline or else it will be Christmas before we finish it ( and there are still two more Throws to go! ).

Anyhow, you know how it is...it's Sunday morning, the Sun is shining, the Cats are lolling about in the shade, it's early, the streets and households in your usually noisy neighbourhood are quiet. Birds and butterflies flit about the plumbago and honeysuckle. So you make a cup of coffee, and still in slippers and Pj's you plonk yourself down on the front steps of the porch. The next thing, there's yarn and a hook in your hands and BAM...a Hexie pops up! I know you all understand exactly how that happens.

And I was thinking, as I made the Hexie how Crochet is one of the few handicrafts left where you have a direct connection to the Maker. Knitting can be made with a machine. Same goes for wood carving, lacemaking, embroidery, cut-work, tapestry, weaving and any number of traditional handwork that has sadly seen ( and been a victim to ) the introduction of mechanisation. Perhaps in the not too distant future Crochet will become part of this list and when that happens we will lose all connection to the people who made the things we love to crochet. I almost cried at THAT thought, but it also made me more determined than ever to support all Makers, all those little handwork co-ops, Mom and Pop Stores, Indie musicians, garage handmade producers, front garden vegetable growers, street corner wire artists, because who makes our stuff means something more to me than feeling like a recipient of a completely soulless mechanisation process. I would love to hear your thoughts on this?

🌷

So saying, some GREAT news for all our local ( Cape Town and Surrounds ) Yarnarinnas! Cape Town will be home to the first ever Cape Town Yarn Festival which is going to be absolutely amazing given all our local Indie Yarn Dyers and fabulously lovely brands like Nurturing Fibres, Colours of Amalfi, Vinnies, Hartlam and many more but MOST OF ALL my all-time local Yarn Crush. Miss La Motte Yarns is going to be there! I have bought several of her hand-dyed skeins and they are so lovely I'm actually too scared to use them!

Next, today's Colour Mood which I called Sunday.
I found this image challenging and there are at least six different colourways we could pick out here but finally, I settled on this. You could definitely throw in some Copper, Teal, Green or Saffron! I've used Stylecraft Special DK but you could match the colours up with Scheepjes Colour Crafter, Catona or any yarn range that gives you loads of colour choices.

On the subject of colour. I am always amazed at how my patterns change depending on how you clever colourists place your colours! Rene van der Westhuizen did this with the Sunday Folk Hexie and seriously, I did not recognise my own design! I mean I did, but she's picked out her light and dark areas so cleverly that I only realised when I looked at it, that I'd made Arum lilies! 😊

If you'd like to see more interesting colourways you could scoot on over HERE. As more are completed I'll keep adding them to the photo section on the Ravelry pattern page.

🌷

I'm enjoying our Friday Giveaways and love showcasing other Designers. I've randomly chosen three Winners from last weeks Giveaway which was the Fjell Cardigan by Lilla Bjorn Crochet, so to all who left a comment please do check your Ravelry Library!

  1. Jen, as always your colour boards and musings on our fabulous craft as inspirational to us all. Plus your designs are an absolute delight to crochet. You make it so easy with the many dimensions you work into each design to make it your and my design with my interpretation of it.
I strongly believe you are probably the most creative designer currently out there.
You alway delight and surprise with your unique style.

  3. Jen you post almost had me in tears. We too support local hand made businesses, and per chance my daughter became an Indie dyer - much to my delight, so I have access to amazing coloured yarn. Then to add to the excitement of the Cape Town Yarn Fest, we were approached to be represented at this exciting event!! So busy assisting in a small way towards hand painting for all you lovelies in CT! Keep a lookout for Luna Fibers at the fest we would love to know what you think of this new kid on the block... Miss La Motte is absolutely gorgeous yarn and it is exciting to know the younger generation are seeing value in the handcraft and natural fiber world. Love love love your Sunday Folk Hexie - now to find time my permanent dilemma. Take care

  4. Hi Jen, I love handmade, handcrafted, Anything! made by the artist in the world. I love your patterns and they have spoiled me, for I find I have no interest in crocheting anything that isn't designed by you. They challenge me, teach me and I am able to create beautiful things. I love your videos, they give me a sense of comraderie with someone who loves the art as much as I do. I am amazed by your gift and look forward to many more happy hours crocheting along with you. Peace, love and hooking! Samantha

    1. It makes me so happy that you're getting something out of the patterns. I love our crochet community...who never existed for me before I got hooked up with Crochet! I make the videos and do picture sharing our time and a bit of hooky over a coffee as we'd do if we all lived closer to each other. :D xx

  5. Ah, I can't imagine how crochet could be mechanised, particularly your intricate patterns! I had a knitting machine for some years, I have 5 kids to knit for - never bought knitwear - and I was able to keep up with their needs as well as take orders, which gave me a healthy income. I bought end cones from the large mills, 1.5 ply which meant I could mix colours or wool-wind to make 3 or 4 strands. I also created my own patterns, just maths really.
I love your stories of South Africa because we've visited in the past, Cape Town where we stayed in Breakwater Lodge, then I drove all up the Garden Route, stayed in Stellenbosch, George, Knysna, Red Stone Hills and more. We loved it so much, the whole ambience and the scenery, and can understand why you don't ever want to leave again. xxx
Love all your patterns, I now have crates of Stylecraft yarn ready to be used for them. xxxxx

    1. I also had five ( have ) kids and did a bit of very basic hand knitting once upon a time. I bought a second hand knitting machine but was completely daunted by it! Lol! Crates of Stylecraft..sounds WONDERFUL!! :D

  9. I'm a big supporter of the indie-dyers, mom & pop shops, and family-owned farms (my alpaca comes from a farm in Alberta: born, raised, sheared, locally spun, hand-dyed, then sold, all by them). Art is an expression of the soul of the maker, no matter the form it takes. Some souls are a bit more "interesting" than others, but sometimes you find the ones that speak to your own. Automated "creators" will never get that. Unfortunately, much of society today reflects the "I want it now! But I don't want to pay THAT much for it!" mentality. My crochet/maker's journey is for me. It's my zen and my expression, and maybe I'll meet some kindred souls along the way.

    1. Wow, that's interesting! I live next door to a guy who has four Alpacas and he gives me a huge bag of their "wool" after shearing season. My husband made a hand-held spindle but for the love of Yarn I cannot get the knack of it. :D I love Alpaca yarn and apparently it's the preferred alternative for people who are allergic to wool? Hope you weekend is fab! xx
