Beanies, for days!

Lovelies, how are you all? How are you bearing up in all this chaos worldwide?

It's still dark outside and very brrrrrrrr! I'm not complaining, I love Winter. A few days ago I was searching for my one and only beanie and realised that yes indeed, I'd given that one away too. I have a bad habit of giving things away that I actually need and it's made me think a lot about charity, or rather charitableness ( if that's a word? ). I'm not writing this for a pat on the back, because giving things away comes naturally to me. It's an affliction of sorts. I do it without thinking. I have literally taken off a jacket, scarf or beanie and given it to a person who looked like they needed it. Once, walking to work in the pouring rain, I saw two people huddled under a tree and yes, you guessed right, I handed over the umbrella and walked the further four blocks in the soaking rain. The next day I was hit with the worst Flu I have ever had which rendered me bed-ridden for two weeks with a further two weeks thrown in for good measure before I was strong enough to return to work. The phrase " a good deed never goes unpunished" springs to mind.

I could write a small book listing food, clothing, household items and even a very handsome crush I gave away to someone else I thought was needier than I was at the time. It's taken me almost my whole life so far to find the sweet spot between taking care of my own needs first, recognising the needs of others, and where ( more importantly how ), I can be of help in a truly productive way that adds to the dignity of the recipient. I've also worked on letting go of what I think people need. It's so easy to project our personal ideals on to a situation or person. We can never truly know what anyone needs unless they tell us, and the conundrum is...how many of us do the internal work of excavating deeply to unearth that information? We often discover that what we want and what we need are entirely two different things, right? It's generally difficult to ask for what we truly need and it's just as difficult to provide the help that is appropriate and profound. These days I ask " how can I be of help? " and without fail, it's always not what I thought I'd hear.

So where was I? Oh, right, my Beanie situation. I made a shortlist of Beanie Requirements.

1. Warm ( but not too warm seeing as Cape Town has four seasons in a day...layers, darling! ).
2. Colours I can match with any outfit.
3. No pom-poms or outrageous colours/patterns.
4. Covers the ears ( those icy south-easters! ).
5. Cannot actually feel it on my head. Heehee.
6. One for each day of the week...Beanies for Days.

I can't promise myself that I'll keep them all ( I've already given two to my beautiful model, Tanya who lives next door and is my youngest sons GF ).

I'd love to hear your thoughts about charity, so do please leave a comment below?
For your trouble, Beanies for Days HERE, is a FREEEEEE pattern ( whether you need it or not ). 😆

Until next time, Lovelies.
Stay well, stay safe, stay calm and crochet on!

💛 Jen

A very big THANK YOU to Tanya who was dragged ( lured with coffee ) out of her warm bed to model the Beanies in the rain!

  5. I crochet mostly for charity (I'll be making lots of these for my group) but during lock down I started making items for my house, a throw for the couch to disguise a worn spot for example. I felt so guilty at first that I was eating into my charity crochet time so in between each 'me' project I did a little 'give away' project to keep the balance and ease the guilt. I kept telling myself its silly to feel guilty and then I remember how much need there is out there and don't feel so silly after all.

    1. Fi, I know exactly what you mean. I think it's the same for me...creating balance, without thinking that that is what I'm doing. Brilliant observation, thank you! If you're coming from that perspective you become aware of your own needs too, right? Charity does really begin at home.xox

  7. Hi Sweet girl. Amazing world - you are in winter and we are hot, hot, hot with our summer just beginning.
Reading your post, I guess you could say give until it hurts? But yes, it sure does feel good to give. My sister-in-law is single. We're kindred spirits in many ways. I SHARE with her whenever I can :)
Thank you so much for the lovely pattern. I'm sure it will make up beautifully! God bless you and keep you!

    1. You're truly blessed to have a sister, Robin! I would have loved to have a sister. Somehow five brothers don't quite do what one sister can. :D I have two daughters who for years have been very competitive against each other which is heartbreaking! I try to remind them how lucky they are to have a sister.Happy week to you and your sister. xox

  8. Thank you Jen! There you go again, giving your pattern away! I like making pieces and then giving them to someone the piece reminds me of. I am always very chuffed when I see that person actually wearing the item. I make my daughter's slouch beanies aka bad hair day beanies, on a round look. I have another pattern I use for my beanies and my sons and husband prefer knitted ones. I have Coffee Cotton in my stash so I am most definitely going to give this a go for myself. Thank you and stay blessed xxxx

    1. Hi Sandy! I love Beanies but I never get the chance to make them and if I do, just like you, I give them away! :D I think I also prefer knitted ones...but I'll have to learn to knit properly before that happens. Wishing you a lovely week! xx

  9. Hi Jen, how are you my dear friend. I know its winter over there so stay warm, over here its NOT summer, rain and more rain. You are a kind soul. I give away what I make and it makes me happy. I love to crochet, but how much can you keep for your self, so I just give them away as presents, or make booties or beanies for 2 childrens homes. Jen my great news is we will ge grand parents again, George our grandson his 1 yr.old now.. will soon have a little sister. :-) Sending many hug's xxx Greetings from Greece Sofia.

  11. Oh dear, 29 degrees Celsius already here and the morning just started. And then you design a beanie XD Love it. My hair is to my bum so wearing a beanie is difficult. I buy big hats that fit over hair and tail. Then I make a simple beanie, son 1 takes it on a cold day, I make an other one, son 2 takes it as it fits my tail and his rasta. I decide to make a bright pink one as sons won't take that. And there daughter inlaw goes with it. Must be a curse. And a blessing ;>D But I love making things for friends, they don't always appreciate it though. Last time I saw my green lace blankie it was upside down frumped in a corner at my friends. All that loving work, as lace is not my favorite to hook. Oh well. People tent to take you for granted if you do things for free. I did work for free in development countries with the team I worked with. The times I was scolded is countless. As I undid Gods work. Tsssss. But I try to say I'm older and wiser now XD I have 3 sister alive and one past away Jen, the one I loved as a mom. The other three are to give away for free but nobody wants the b!tches. Give me brothers anytime but not mine alas. Family (roles eyes) Love my own little family, includingmy fur and feathered babies.

    1. Wow, Tineke I'd love to see a pic of that hair! :D So true how Beanies grow little legs and run away to a new head! Yes. Pink would be the solution but not the ultimate solution...my sons would wear a pink beanie just to make a point that no beanie is safe. :D Sorry to hear about your sister (s)...I never had one so it always seems very sad when sisters are lost or don't get along. I see it with my two daughters...so much drama between them, I don't understand that. Hugs to you my dear friend. xox

  12. Love the beanie pattern thank you! And charity certainly begins at home for me - 3 little girls all wanting whatever I am making at the time... but I have managed to give away lots too so it seems charity and crafting go hand in hand...

    1. So true...we craft so often we'd have to have ginormous families to absorb our makes...or simply just pass along to those in need or we would be snowed under! :D I'm happy to report that this beanie is very easy to downsize or upsize ( I hope you'll post some pics on the Group? ). xox

  14. I caught genital herpes from my ex boyfriend who never had any symptoms. I have had it for 4 months now,and it has affected my life. I have told my husband who I trusted about it and I have never had a bad reaction, it has affected my new relationships with my husband. People think herpes is really a minor skin irritation herpes has a long term effects on health. The stigma attached to this virus by ignorant people is ridiculous. Most people have herpes in one form or another. I would like to advise people on how i get rid of my herpes.i was reading a comment on the internet, and i saw a testimony posted by a woman from island that she get rid of her herpes with the help of doctor Oduku. so i was so happy when i saw that post, that his herbal medication is cheap.i quickly collect the herbal doctor email and i email him within 5 hr he respond to my email.i explain things to him he told me not to worry that i should fill his herbal form wish i did.he only request for little money that he will use to buy the items for the preparation of the herbal medicine, wish i send to him because the pain was too much for me to bear.after some days he told me that he has prepare the herbal medicine, that i should send him my address that he want to sent it to me via DHL or FED-EX that was how i got the herbal medication.and i use it as i was told.after few days i found out that my herpes was no more.when some of my friend who has herpes saw me they were surprise and i also introduce them to the man and they are also cure from the same herpes.if you have herpes, kindly contact doctor oduku via this email odukuherbalremedies@gmail.com ttps://www.facebook.com/Herpes-Eraser-102292594719987/ https://permanentnaturalherbalcure.wordpress.com/
